Traditional rural skills remain useful because they allow land, crops and vegetation to be managed selectively and at an appropriate scale. They can harvest food, restore living boundaries and turn cut material into hay, mulch, compost, stakes, habitat or other useful resources.
LeftHand provides scythe mowing, small-scale harvesting and threshing, orchard care, coppicing and conservation hedgelaying for rural homes, smallholdings, farms, community projects and sensitive sites across the South West.
Each service can be commissioned individually or used within a wider productive system. A scythed orchard floor can become mulch or hay; a laid hedge can provide shelter and future biomass; a harvested grain plot can become the next stage of a poultry rotation.
Traditional Rural Services
Scythe Mowing
Quiet, precise mowing for meadows, orchards, gardens and sensitive sites where machinery would be unsuitable or unnecessarily disruptive. Cut material can be removed, made into hay or reused elsewhere on the site.
Traditional Haymaking
Small areas of grass can be cut, turned and gathered as loose hay for livestock, poultry bedding, mulching or composting. This provides a productive use for grassland without relying on heavy machinery.
Conservation Hedgelaying
Overgrown and declining hedges are laid to create dense, living boundaries that provide shelter, habitat and long-term structure. Our approach prioritises conservation value and practical future management.
Coppice & Woodland Products
Hazel and other suitable woodland growth can be coppiced to regenerate stools and produce useful poles, stakes, pea sticks and biomass. Smaller material can be retained as habitat, composted or reused around the site.
Traditional Orchard Care
Practical establishment and seasonal care for traditional and productive orchards, including planting, formative pruning, vegetation management and the reuse of prunings as mulch, habitat or composting material.
Grain Harvesting & Threshing
Small plots of wheat and other grains can be harvested and processed at a household or community scale. We can help with cutting, drying, threshing and separating the grain from its useful straw.
Rural skills with a modern purpose
These services are not offered simply to preserve an old-fashioned appearance. They provide practical ways to work on small or inaccessible sites, reduce ground disturbance, process household-scale crops, restore living boundaries and keep useful biomass on the property.
The method is matched to the objective. Sometimes that means hand tools; sometimes a compact tractor or other small machinery is more proportionate. The purpose is to improve how the land functions, not to impose a particular aesthetic or technique.
